This Used to Be My Life
Something’s off. You’ll see.
It’s been a minute.
Life’s been changing behind the scenes in some big ways and I’ll be sharing more about all of that soon. But for now, just know I’m back, there’s a lot to come, and I’m excited to finally start putting words to what’s been swirling around for months.
This prompt is from the storytelling course I’m taking with my amazing friend Marc Cordon. It comes on the heels of the Storyteller Summit last month, and I’m easing back into the swing of things with something simple: the setup.
This week’s prompt was all about establishing what life looks like before something changes. Before the questions start. Before the story really begins.
What you’ll read below is my take. A short glimpse into the ordinary — with a few small cracks starting to show. See if you can tell what’s really going on.
My daily routine was pretty simple. I usually get up a few times during the night to grab a drink, but it’s no big deal. I fall right back asleep.
Then the alarm goes off. I roll around in the covers for a bit, then finally get up. No stops — just straight out the door to my favorite place: the backyard.
The backyard was amazing. So many sights and smells. But it was also home to my sworn enemy: squirrels.
After I chase them off, I go to the bathroom and head back inside.
At least, that used to be my life. Not anymore.
A month or so ago, I got taken to my least favorite place: the doctor’s office. I got a bunch of shots, they took some samples, and then we went back home.
But something felt different. There were boxes everywhere. Things started disappearing. Strangers came and hauled off a bunch of stuff. I didn’t know any of them.
Next thing I know, the whole house is empty except for a few boxes and some luggage. Something was off, but I couldn’t figure out what.
Then we hit the road. Long drive on the highway. I slept most of the way.
A few hours later, we’re at my grandparents’ house.
It’s okay here, I guess — except for my cousins. They never leave me alone. Always wanting to play. I just want to sleep.
Let me know if you spotted the interesting thing about this setup. Or better yet, try the prompt yourself and share your version with me.
I’ve got more writing from this storytelling course coming your way — plus a big life update that’s been a long time coming. Can’t wait to share it all.

Methinks the perspective was somewhat different than I originally thought. LOVE IT.
