I Miss You
An ode to a dear friend who gave us so much.
An excerpt and tribute from my upcoming memoir. Read the follow-up: I Found You.
I miss you
The party you held
Twenty people gathered around
Pookie headbands, hot dogs, trivia, and a giant cake
I miss you
Friends gathered
People stuffed themselves full
Smiles all around
I miss you
Projector casting a movie onto the fence
Graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate, and a roaring fire
Messy hands and chocolate dripping down to the ground
I miss you
A plastic pool filled with water
Bringing Pookie and Lana in
Enjoying the summer rays
I miss you
The couch with a broken arm
Buying a birdhouse kit at Lowes
Creating a makeshift scaffolding out of it
I miss you
The birthplace of Grimly Gala
Creepy dolls haunting the living room
Each order packed with joy
I miss you
Pookie and Chip
Spending weeks together
Fighting over food
I miss you
Bringing home treasures from Goodwill
And plants from nurseries
Filling you with love
I miss you
You were a home for squirrels
A hideout for rats
But they weren’t supposed to be inside
I miss you
Sharing a fence with Aaron and Carolina
Taking many dips in their pool
Hosting them for dinners
I miss you
Buckets of passion fruit falling to the ground
Nonstop sweet potatoes and papayas
Twenty pound watermelons off the vine
I miss you
You started off empty with a couple of chairs and boxes of pizzas
Became full to the brim with stuff
Were emptied out again
I miss you
You filled our hearts with joy
Gave us many memories
We loved calling you our Florida home

Kevin, this is so lovely. Your Florida home sounds like it was filled with so many wonderful memories.
I loooove the style of this. It's a love letter, a poem, and takes us into the moment and the mood of the bittersweet love of a place that once held you.
